Katmandu Valley & Lhasa Tibet Tour

Trip type : Kathmandu / Tibet tour.

Day 1: Airport- Kathmandu

Upon arrival at kathmandu international Airport, transfer to hotel. Evening welcome dinner and program briefing.

Day 2: kathmandu-swoyambhuath-patan-kathmandu

The first half of the day will be spent visiting the old Royal palace of kathamandu and the swoyambhunath stupa. Around the centralDurbar(palace)square are the old Royal palace, the entrance to which is guarded by the monkey god Hanuman and numerous other temples and statues. Among the more notable one is the Kumari temple. The Kumari, or the living goddess, is a young girl who lives in the building known as the Kumari chowk, right besides kathmandu's Durbar square. The Kumari is not a born goddess and nor does she remain one all her life. She is usually chosen from a caste of Newar goldsmith when she is about five years old. Drive west from the kathmandu durbar square to Swoyambhunath stupa. This Buddhist stupa, known also as the monkey temple due to the hordes of monkeys that inhabit the hill, is one of the world's most famous Buddhist chaitya believed to be 2000 years old. It is built atop a 77-meter high hillock on the western rim of the valley. The chaitya, which forms the main structure, is made of a solid hemisphere of brick and earth supporting a lofty conical spire capped by a pinnacle of gilded copper. Painted on the four-sided base of the spire are the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha.

In the afternoon, drive southeast of the city of patan. The patan Durbar square is very beautiful and artistic. Most of the buildings of the square were built in the 17 th century. The old Royal palace and the Taleju temple stand on the left side of the square and a host of other temples stand on the right. The Krishna temple is the most famous and one of the best known temples in Nepal , built in 1657. the characteristic feature of the temple is that no nails or wood have been used and the construction is entirely of stones. From the Krishna temple, the golden temple is only two minutes walk. It is a very famous Bihar (monastery) for the Buddhists of the valley and contains a very active congregation of devotees. The large rectangular monastery built in the 12 th century has a gold plated roof topping a magnificent structure. The life of the Buddha is illustrated in frieze in front of the main shrine. The temple of the thousand Buddha or the Mahabuddha temple is in shikhara style and is modeled after the original Mahabuddha temple at Bodhagaya in India . Originally constructed in the 14 th century, the terra-cota temple was severely damaged in the 1934 earthquake and later rebuilt. Each of the bricks in the building contains an image of the Buddha. Inside, there is a shrine dedicated to Maya Devi, the mother of Buddha.

Day 3 : Kathmandu - Pashupatinath- Boudha - kathmandu :

Pasupatinath is the most famous Hindu temple and is located on the bank of the Bagmati river, 5km from kathmandu. The deity is believed to be the patron deity of the kingdom of Nepal . While the temple complex including the inner century is open to the Hindus only , there are many other things to see which are interesting to non Hindus. After Pasupatinath for the drive to the Boudhanath. This is fantastic Buddhist Stupa at a place known as Buddha, 8km east of Kathmandu . The largest spherical stupa is held in great veneration both by lama's of Nepal and Tibet and also by the Hindus.

Day 4: kathmandu-Lhasa:

After breakfast flight from kathmandu to Lhasa . it is an hours flight to Lhasa over the highest Himalayan range of the world upon arrival at Lhasa transfer and check into your hotel. Full day for rest and acclimatization.

Day 5:Lhasa-potala palace-Jokhang-Barkhor-Lhasa :

After breakfast visit the potala palace. The present shape of the potala palace was built by the 5 th Dalai Lama between 1645-1693. This architecture wonder of the world exists on the Red hill and rises more than 300 meters from the valley floor and is visible for moles from all directions. It was the winter palace og Dalai Lama. After lunch, visit Jokhang temple and Barkhor Bazaar. The Jokhang temple is situated in the central part of the old section of Lhasa . It was built in mid 7 th century. With successive extensions, it has now become a gigantic architectural complex which houses various wives of king Srongtsen Gampo including the Nepalese queen Brikuti. The Bazaar of Barkhor is the downtown of Lhasa city with Jokhang temple as its center from where one can enjoy the hustle and bustle of everyday Tibetan lifestyle. Overnight in hotel.

Day 6: Lhasa - drepung - sera - Lhasa :

After breakfast visit Drepung Monastery. It is the biggest monastery in Tibet which once housed some ten thousand monks. Situated on the foothill to the northern direction of Lhasa city, it was built in 1416 by Jamyang Choge, a disciple of Tsong Khapa. After lunch, visit Sera Monastery. It is the second biggest monastery in Tibet . It used to house more than 8000 monks. It was founded in 1419. the best thing to see here is the live debate taking place among the competing monks from the different monastery in Tibet . Overnight in hotel.

Day 7: Lhasa - Gyantse :

Full day picturesque drive of 261 kilometer to Gyantse (3950m) crossing over the Tibetan lifeline river Brahma Putra (Yarlung sangpo) plus Karola (5010m) , Kambala (4794m) and the holy and colorful Yamdrok lake. Overnight in hotel Gyantse.

Day 8: Gyantas - xigatse

Morning sightseeing to the Kumbum stupa and Phalkor monastery in Gyantse. Kumbum literally means 100,000 images including paintings. It was built in 1440 with strongly flavored Newari architectural style from Nepal . phalkor monastery was founded in 1418. it is a complex of three different sects; Gelkupa, Sakyapa and bhoton. There are more than 100 chapels worth visiting. After lunch, drive 90 kilometers to Xigatse (3900m) and visit Panchen Lama's Tashilhumpu monastery. It is the seat of Panchen lama, founded in 1447 by Gedum Drup, the first in Xigatse proper, which once housed almost 4000 monks. The main chapel- Maitreya chapel posses a giant 26 meter high sculpture of Maitreya Buddha (the future Buddha). Overnight in hotel Xigates.

Day 9: Xigatse - Lhasa:

Scenic drive back to Lhasa (380 kilometers) via the northern route along the Brahmaputra river. Overnight in hotel.

Day 10 : Lhasa - ganden - Lhasa:

Full - day excursion to Ganden (4240 meters), the paradise of Tushita and the abode of Jampa, the future Buddha. It is the site where Tsong Khapa (1357-1419) first meditated in order to choose a place for the main monastery of the sect. after sightseeing in Ganden, drive back to Lhasa.

Day 11: Lhasa - kathmandu :

Early morning drive to Gonggar Airport for departure flight to kathmandu.

Up on arrival at kathmandu, transfer to hotel.

Day 12: kathmandu - Bhaktapur - Nagarkot :

Bhaktapur, also known as Bhadgaun is shaped like of conch. It is a medieval city designed in the 19 th century by it's founder king Ananda Malla. Having an area of 139 square km, it is situated at 1331meter from the sea level and 13 km east of Nepal. The cities craftsman build in decorated houses, make pottery and adorn temples. From the very beginning this city has Attracted foreigners because of its medieval charm and the ancients way of life still on - spoilt to this day. The main Durbar square holding the place of 55 windows, the golden gate that opens through to the Taleju temple, the national art gallery having a good collection of thangka paintings are of immense attraction. The ancient's Royal palace is remarkable. And excellent temple of 18 th century architecture. The Nyatopala temple is Nepal's tallest five-tiered temple that stands not far from the Durbar square. The pottery market is very near to the Nyatapol temple. The Akash Vhairav temple the Dattatraya shrine, Pujarinath with excellent wood work, the famous peacock window located south of Dattatraya temple, the Bramayane Mandir, are all of equal importance and example of fine art and culture of Bhaktapur.

Nagarkot located about 14 km northeast from Bhaktapur and at an elevation of 1838 meter from sea level is among one of the best place for a countryside tour with mountain views. The road to Nagarkot grands on with view of terraced farmland and pine forests. It is the only place from where one can view of panorama of the entire eastern and central Himalayas views of including Everest, Numbor,Cho-oyu, Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu and Manasalu, hole Annapurna and Langtang, Ganesh himal and Dorjelhakpa , Shisapangma in Tibetian Himalayan range And Machhapuchchhre(Fish tail) to the west.

Overnight in Nagarkot.

Day 13: Nagarkot - Dakshinkali - kritipur - kathmandu:

The goddess Devi or Bhagwati is worshipped in Nepal to forms the benevolent form, like the devine mother and the terrible form like a demon. The goddess Dakshinkli is located 25 km from kathmandu on the southern edge of the valley and epitomizes the image of the goddess Kali. The temple is at the bottom of a steep hill with a small stream flowing close by. Devotes make animal sacrifice every Tuesday and Saturday to quench the thirst of the blood thirsty Kali. Continue to the city of Kritipur that was founded by Shivadev in the 11 th century. When king Prithivi Narayan Shah was attempting to conquer kathmandu valley he met stiff resistant at this strategic point and only after suffering heavy loses of man and material was the king able to subdued Kritipur. This town is located on a ridge 5 km southwest of kathmandu. The town also gives excellent view of the Himalayan peaks especially during the autumn month. The Baghbhairav, the Uma Maheshower, Laxi Narayan and the recently constructed monastery are some of the other places to be seen here.

Day 14: kathmandu - Airport :

Departure transfer to the kathmandu international Airport to connect your onward flight.
